44. The First Encounter Between the Two
“I decided to enter an engagement with Alisa out of my own volition.”
Despite hearing it from Alex-sama’s own mouth, I was still in disbelief.
It couldn’t be.
Alex-sama and I were engaged when we were 12-years-old.
The engagement itself should have been a house-to-house arrangement between the royal family and the duke family. Therefore, Alex-sama couldn’t have played part in the decision making.
As if he had seen through my heart, Alex-sama continued.
“Of course, the decision wasn’t entirely made by me. However, I definitely chose Alisa. Originally, my fiancée should’ve been Elena.”
“Elena was supposed to be Alex-sama’s fiancée?”
Upon repeating his words, I realized they wren’t at all strange. Rather, not only was Elena the golden child, she had the brilliance of a future queen.
Although, Elena was a bit younger than Alex-sama. Regardless, in aristocratic marriages, the female counterpart tended to be younger.
In other words, Elena was a much more suitable candidate than I was.
Then, instead of Elena, why did I become Alex-sama’s fiancée?
“I said it, didn’t I? I chose Alisa.”
“Even if that is the case, there are two things that I am unable to quite wrap my head around.”
First, why would Alex-sama chose me as his fiancée? Back when you were still 12-years-old, why would he choose me over Elena?
As for the other question, it was related to a past statement of his. Alex-sama said that he was indebted to me. The position of a crown prince’s fiancée was a honorable one. Therefore, why would he make me a future queen solely based off gratitude?
After I had mentioned that, Alex-sama showed a lonely expression.
“Do you recall the grand party at the royal castle from when you were 12-years-old?”
“I do. It was the greeting ceremony with His Majesty the King.”
Aristocratic children between the ages of 10 and 12 in that kingdom were required to visit the royal capital to receive an audience with the king.
Said greeting ceremony was held once every three years.
At the same time, a grand party was hosted by the royal family. The aristocratic children, along with their parents, would be invited.
At that time, I was 12-years-old while Elena was 10-years-old.
Since it happened six years ago, I couldn’t remember the details.
However, Alex-sama and His Highness Mikhail should’ve attended as well.
Alex-sama blushed.
…Although it might be because of all the steam in the room, his expression was dyed with bashfulness.
“…That was my first meeting with Alisa.”
