11. Fate of the Engagement (5)
Amelia and William went to the terrace. The chilling night breeze brushed against their cheeks. Behind the thick clouds, the moon was hiding.
Amelia leaned on the terrace fence and silently stared at the garden. Meanwhile, William stared at Ameliaās back.
Silence continued on, and it was William who broke it.
āLady Amelia, what is currently on your mind?ā
That was William honest thought.
Amelia answered William while her back was still turned on him.
āWhat it is, I wonderā¦ā
āWhy do you avoid people? I asked Lewisāthe way you treated your servants is very different compared to your peers. Whatās the reason for that?ā
William kept gazing at Ameliaās back and continued.
āI understand your refusal towards this engagement. I honestly never expected you would accept my proposal. This may sounds rude, but, even if your words of acceptance are false, my happiness that you accepted me is real.ā
āāhappy, you sayā¦?ā
Towards Williamās words, Amelia gave off an extremely displeased aura. Her eyes were glaring at him.
āThank you, but your white lie is unnecessary. I have said this alreadyāI hate being made a fool of.ā
āā¦ā
That silenced William. Ameliaās current expression wasnāt that of her dignified, calm selfānor was it of her at the tea party.
Neither cold nor ruthless;
Neither gentle nor tender;
The only thing he could feel from Amelia was a dignified strength.
āThis is⦠your true self, isnāt it?ā
āIndeed. We are engaged. Youāre going to be my husband, arenāt you? Then, when weāre alone together, this is whom I shall be and forever will be.ā
āThatās⦠uh, Iām a little happyā¦ā
Amelia let Williamās words slid.
āFrom now on, whatever questions you might ask, Iāll answerābut before that, I want you to swear something to me.ā
āā¦An oath?ā
William frowned. āAnd if I donāt?ā
āYou can just kiss your engagement goodbye, then.ā
āā¦ā
William hid his displeasure towards Ameliaās bluntness behind his calm expression.
Alright, he could at least listen to the content, first.
Amelia saw readiness on Williamās face and proceeded.
āānever fall in love with me.ā
āā¦Ha?ā
āSwear it. Youāll never fall in love with me.ā
William was puzzled by Ameliaās serious expression.
āweāre going to get married anyway, so whatās the point of making your partner swear that?
āā¦But why?ā
āWhy not? The reason isnāt all that important. First of all; swearāthe reason, later.ā
āā¦ā
William thoughtāthereās no choice.
Beside, this oath of never loving Amelia, William was confident he could keep it.
āI understand. I swear. Iāll never love you.ā
āGood, very good.ā
Amelia smiled.
āāthe reason is simple: thereās someone else that I love, from the bottom of my heart.ā
āEh?ā
The ordinariness and naivety of her reason were the reasons William found it unexpected.
āFufu~ William-sama, no matter what some might say about me, Iām still an ordinary human, tooādid you forget that? You shouldnāt rely too much on Lewisā depiction of meāā
There was a fleeting loneliness in Ameliaās eyes.
āāI had entirely given my heart to him, and no one else. Thatās why I didnāt want to be with anyone else. I turned my face away from the world. But lately, I found that I canāt keep doing soāand the reason is youā¦ā
Amelia continued.
āI once gave you a chance to annul the engagementāyet you didnāt do so. So, Iāve decided to let you take advantage of it. You can do as much as you want, use me, itās fine. Iāll play the perfect ladyāafter this much, you understand what I mean, right?ā
William felt that Ameliaās ironic smile overlapped with Lewisā.
āI understand. But tell me this.ā
āWhat is it?ā
āYour lover, what is he doing now?ā
At Williamās question, Amelia narrowed her eyes.
āāhe has passed away.ā
āā¦ā
āThatās why, you neednāt worry about me seeing him.ā
āā¦thatās how it is, huh.ā
He never thought about that. Feeling heavy, William swallowed his words.
Amelia was laughingānot a dignified one, and certainly not a refined one, eitherācarefree, Amelia laughed without a care in a world.
Such a laugh was unbecoming for someone who was raised as a ladyāa laugh without reservation.
āFufufu~ I understand, now. Youāre truly easy to read. Iāve never met Lewis, but now I feel himā
āāthatās a first. No one has said anything like that to me before.ā
āOf course, with that Marquis father of yours, who would dare utter something so outrageous to you?ā
Amelia retorted while shrugging.
āCan I ask a question, too?ā
āSure?ā
āWhat kind of person is Lewis?ā
āLewis?ā
William couldnāt figure the intent of this question.
āI also tasked someone to investigate Lewis, but I didnāt gather muchāactually, nothing, nothing at all⦠Does Lewis truly deserve that much credit from you?ā
āWell, thatās only natural. I picked Lewis up from the streets when he was nine and named him. This may not be the answer ā¦but from my heart, I trust Lewis.ā
No lie could be found in Williamās eyes.
āI see, I hope so, too, then⦠Letās return to the ballroom. Iām going to dispel all my misdeeds. William, Iām sorry to ask this of you, but I need your help.ā
Amelia entangled her arm around Williamās, and the bright smile of a maiden soon returned to her face once again.
William smiled bitterly at Ameliaās steadfast transformation. His premonition told him that his days of boredom had come to an end.
**T/N: You sure you can keep that oath, young un’?
No he won’t.. He’s too pure and well.. Bored ???
thanks for translating it š I really like this story, I just wish she would fall for someone else..maybe even Lewis even though I know its not gonna happen. I just think its sad that she still loves him after all this time, while he had a carefree life(s) the whole time. Even though its not his fault im mad that he had no problems the whole time haha^^
He obviously canāt. Dude, heās to honest to play act like this. Heās going to fall so hard.
I want to start an #antilewis movement
Oh my, F_J you sounds like an expert.
ara ara William swore so easily ⦠I want to see him fall
Thank so much!
My god my story has become a gathering place for sadists!!!!
Youāre already too far gone, young one.
Hohoā¦. and he gonna fall in love with her in no time for sure
