11. Fate of the Engagement (5)
Amelia and William went to the terrace. The chilling night breeze brushed against their cheeks. Behind the thick clouds, the moon was hiding.
Amelia leaned on the terrace fence and silently stared at the garden. Meanwhile, William stared at Ameliaâs back.
Silence continued on, and it was William who broke it.
âLady Amelia, what is currently on your mind?â
That was William honest thought.
Amelia answered William while her back was still turned on him.
âWhat it is, I wonderâŠâ
âWhy do you avoid people? I asked Lewisâthe way you treated your servants is very different compared to your peers. Whatâs the reason for that?â
William kept gazing at Ameliaâs back and continued.
âI understand your refusal towards this engagement. I honestly never expected you would accept my proposal. This may sounds rude, but, even if your words of acceptance are false, my happiness that you accepted me is real.â
ââhappy, you sayâŠ?â
Towards Williamâs words, Amelia gave off an extremely displeased aura. Her eyes were glaring at him.
âThank you, but your white lie is unnecessary. I have said this alreadyâI hate being made a fool of.â
ââŠâ
That silenced William. Ameliaâs current expression wasnât that of her dignified, calm selfânor was it of her at the tea party.
Neither cold nor ruthless;
Neither gentle nor tender;
The only thing he could feel from Amelia was a dignified strength.
âThis is⊠your true self, isnât it?â
âIndeed. We are engaged. Youâre going to be my husband, arenât you? Then, when weâre alone together, this is whom I shall be and forever will be.â
âThatâs⊠uh, Iâm a little happyâŠâ
Amelia let Williamâs words slid.
âFrom now on, whatever questions you might ask, Iâll answerâbut before that, I want you to swear something to me.â
ââŠAn oath?â
William frowned. âAnd if I donât?â
âYou can just kiss your engagement goodbye, then.â
ââŠâ
William hid his displeasure towards Ameliaâs bluntness behind his calm expression.
Alright, he could at least listen to the content, first.
Amelia saw readiness on Williamâs face and proceeded.
âânever fall in love with me.â
ââŠHa?â
âSwear it. Youâll never fall in love with me.â
William was puzzled by Ameliaâs serious expression.
âweâre going to get married anyway, so whatâs the point of making your partner swear that?
ââŠBut why?â
âWhy not? The reason isnât all that important. First of all; swearâthe reason, later.â
ââŠâ
William thoughtâthereâs no choice.
Beside, this oath of never loving Amelia, William was confident he could keep it.
âI understand. I swear. Iâll never love you.â
âGood, very good.â
Amelia smiled.
ââthe reason is simple: thereâs someone else that I love, from the bottom of my heart.â
âEh?â
The ordinariness and naivety of her reason were the reasons William found it unexpected.
âFufu~ William-sama, no matter what some might say about me, Iâm still an ordinary human, tooâdid you forget that? You shouldnât rely too much on Lewisâ depiction of meââ
There was a fleeting loneliness in Ameliaâs eyes.
ââI had entirely given my heart to him, and no one else. Thatâs why I didnât want to be with anyone else. I turned my face away from the world. But lately, I found that I canât keep doing soâand the reason is youâŠâ
Amelia continued.
âI once gave you a chance to annul the engagementâyet you didnât do so. So, Iâve decided to let you take advantage of it. You can do as much as you want, use me, itâs fine. Iâll play the perfect ladyâafter this much, you understand what I mean, right?â
William felt that Ameliaâs ironic smile overlapped with Lewisâ.
âI understand. But tell me this.â
âWhat is it?â
âYour lover, what is he doing now?â
At Williamâs question, Amelia narrowed her eyes.
ââhe has passed away.â
ââŠâ
âThatâs why, you neednât worry about me seeing him.â
ââŠthatâs how it is, huh.â
He never thought about that. Feeling heavy, William swallowed his words.
Amelia was laughingânot a dignified one, and certainly not a refined one, eitherâcarefree, Amelia laughed without a care in a world.
Such a laugh was unbecoming for someone who was raised as a ladyâa laugh without reservation.
âFufufu~ I understand, now. Youâre truly easy to read. Iâve never met Lewis, but now I feel himâ
ââthatâs a first. No one has said anything like that to me before.â
âOf course, with that Marquis father of yours, who would dare utter something so outrageous to you?â
Amelia retorted while shrugging.
âCan I ask a question, too?â
âSure?â
âWhat kind of person is Lewis?â
âLewis?â
William couldnât figure the intent of this question.
âI also tasked someone to investigate Lewis, but I didnât gather muchâactually, nothing, nothing at all⊠Does Lewis truly deserve that much credit from you?â
âWell, thatâs only natural. I picked Lewis up from the streets when he was nine and named him. This may not be the answer âŠbut from my heart, I trust Lewis.â
No lie could be found in Williamâs eyes.
âI see, I hope so, too, then⊠Letâs return to the ballroom. Iâm going to dispel all my misdeeds. William, Iâm sorry to ask this of you, but I need your help.â
Amelia entangled her arm around Williamâs, and the bright smile of a maiden soon returned to her face once again.
William smiled bitterly at Ameliaâs steadfast transformation. His premonition told him that his days of boredom had come to an end.
**T/N: You sure you can keep that oath, young un’?
No he won’t.. He’s too pure and well.. Bored ???
thanks for translating it đ I really like this story, I just wish she would fall for someone else..maybe even Lewis even though I know its not gonna happen. I just think its sad that she still loves him after all this time, while he had a carefree life(s) the whole time. Even though its not his fault im mad that he had no problems the whole time haha^^
He obviously canât. Dude, heâs to honest to play act like this. Heâs going to fall so hard.
I want to start an #antilewis movement
