24: He was a Kind Person
- Trigger Warning: Suicide
āāHow scary, he had become a serial killer…ā
āWith the war over, I thought peace had finally arrived…ā
āHe probably couldnāt forget the war after all his time on the battlefield…ā
The royal capital was bustling with the news about Joshua, the serial killer.
āNo way, did he mistake this place as the battlefield? I expect no less from a mercenaryāā
āāActually, he was a nobleman, not a mercenary.ā
Everyone ran their mouths.
They, who knew nothing about Joshua, spoke as if he were an absolute evil.
On the battlefield, he looked out for his comrades, and would extend a helping hand to those who were injured or incapacitated. Even if, letās say, it was to an enemy soldier.
In truth, he probably didnāt want to kill anybody.
Rather than swords and guns, his hands were better suited for books and pens.
During battle, heād draw his weapon and kill, but at night, heād vomit remembering the men he had killed. As his hands trembled, he cried and looked into the sky, seeking absolution.
War changed him.
Even though the war was over, our war hadnāt ended.
āI want to see Joshua.ā
I couldnāt believe that Joshua was a serial killer. I wanted to hear the truth straight from him, so I requested a meeting.
āLet me confirm something. Please wait a moment.ā
After saying that, the knight went inside. As I waited, I recalled how excited the old ladies got hearing about the serial killing.
āAs long as it doesnāt affect you, crime can be an entertainment, it seems.ā
The series of murders committed by Joshua became the main topic at social gatherings. Although the women who attended expressed negative emotions such as, āHow terrifying,ā and, āAbsolutely horrendous,ā their eyes glimmered with curiosity.
Even if such incidents happened in their neighborhoods, so long as they didnāt involve their relatives, friends, etc., theyād disregard it as someone elseās business entirely.
āPlease come in.ā
The knight led me to where Joshua wasābehind iron bars.
āHey, Iris. Iām so sorry that this happened.ā
Joshua, who bowed his head, seemed possessed by something.
For the time being, I told him to sit down as I composed myself.
ā…Why did you do it? Did you really do it?ā
I hesitated as to what to say, but in the end, nothing came to mind, so I just went straight with my own questions.
āUh-huh, thatās right, I did it. What about it?ā
āYou arenāt covering for someone?ā
āNope.ā
āWhy?ā
āNo clue. Before I knew it, they were dead.ā
Joshua brought his hand forward and stared at it, as if reliving the killings.
I often stared at my hands. I was horrified to see myself overlapping with him.
Instead of Joshua, it was like I was staring at my own reflection.
āLook, Iris.ā
Joshua showed me his hand.
āItās covered in blood.ā
āāJoshua, thereās no blood. Youāre hallucinating.ā
āI know. But I can still see it, blood. Lots of it. Iāve killed many. How many more do I have to kill?ā
āJoshua.ā
āDo I still have to kill? When can I go home?ā
āJoshua.ā
āI have to kill them. There are still so many of them. Otherwise, it wonāt end, I wonāt be able to go home. I want to go home. To go home, I need to kill them.ā
āJoshuaā!ā
Only after I yelled did Joshua shut his mouth and stare at me.
āJoshua, the war is over. This isnāt the battlefield.ā
ā...Oh, oh, right. This isāwhere is this? This is the royal capital. Iām back. Iām home, Mother. Iām back. Then why do I still have to kill people? Arenāt we at war? But the war is over… Then why am I still killing people?ā
āJoshua…ā
When I called his name, Joshua stared straight at me. He was smiling, but there were tears in his eyes. His sniffles turned into sobs as he wailed like a child.
āI-Iāve killed. Iāve killed manyāI had to; I had no choice. After all, I wanted to go home. All I wanted was to go home!ā
By that, he probably wasnāt referring to the serial killings, but those he had killed on the battlefield.
āJoshua, the war is over. Itās over. Weāre home.ā
āI-I see…ā
Joshua nodded repeatedly, perhaps realizing that heād returned.
āIām sorry, Iris. Iāve gone crazy.ā
āJoshua, you arenāt crazy. Youāre just too kind.ā
If he hadnāt told himself that there was no other choice, he might succumb to guilt. Using the same method, he justified killing others and survived the battlefield. He didnāt want to dieāhe just wanted to go home.
Instead, it led to his imprisonment.
Joshua would be put on trial, and I didnāt know what kind of sentence heād receive. Regardless of which, heād probably suffer for the rest of his life.
Should we really have survived? Should we have perished on the battlefield instead?
I donāt know.
āIāll come again.ā
āIāll be waiting.ā
At last, Joshua laughed. At the same time, itād was his last smile. Before he could be put on trial, Joshua used the gap in the knightās patrol to take his own life.
He had committed suicide.
āāJoshua, are you freed of your hallucinations and nightmares?ā
Of course, his cold body couldnāt answer.
If back then, he had been honest with me, Iād have done something.
If Iād done something when he came to visit, could I have changed this outcome?
We shouldnāt have survived.

HAH you’re right
“iris, how could you feel sad?! a war hero like you!”
“a fellow ‘war hero’ just died because of the overwhelming trauma of killing so much during the war”
“but he’s a murderer!”
“i am too”
“thats different!!!! Elda doesn’t count!!”
long sigh
yes definitely, she’s still too naive to do any good in such a delicate situation. not that she’ll meet him now. maybe she’ll make some sort of insensitive comment to iris instead š¤”
Or she will be like, why do you look so sad? You killed our enemies! Elda’s a prick anyway!
yeah, I do wonder what the princess will say to him. Though, it’d definitely do more harm than good.
no but also this is a very good way to demonstrate why iris is so intolerant towards the princess cus like. if our lovely princess met joshua her reaction to him would have been so very different — firstly because she’s the type of person to condemn him immediately and not bother meeting with him at all because he is a terrible criminal, and secondly because through her rose tinted glasses she cannot comprehend why war may be so traumatising to someone like him. meeting joshua would have been a huge wake up call as to the impacts of fighting on the princess, but im glad joshua wasnt used that way. this chapter was very sad š
GRAAAAAGH NOOOOO I JINXED IT NOOOOO !!!!! JOSHUA BELOVED WHY JOSHUA WHY šššš WHAT HAVE I DONE
