6. A Thousand Years of Memories (6)
āāthis is purely an assumption; I donāt think Amelia actually hates peopleāsheās just pretending, for whatever reason. However, if I may hazard a guess, she may have done so in order to avoid the engagement. William, youāre well-known for your fair treatmentāand Amelia is using it against you, by mistreating the maid, that is.ā
Lewisā explanation only made Williamās confusion grow.
āā¦But why would she do that? For what purpose?ā
Pretending to be inhumane, and putting it into practice in front of meā
āLewis answered the question;
āIāll admit that Iām confused, too. Maybe she just doesnāt like the idea of being engaged.ā
āā¦But still, was all of that with maid and tea party necessary?ā
If she hates the idea that much, she could just be honest with me. One word; and Iāll understand. Iām not the kind of man whoāll force a relationship to continue when the other party despises it so much. Thatās just not right.
William was a man with clear conscience. Then, he inquired further;
āLady Amelia is famous for being inhuman. She only needs to make it clear to meāthat she hates people and doesnāt intend to accept anyoneās proposalāshouldnāt that have been enough?ā
Why would she bother enacting such a charade with her maidāhe couldnāt wrap his fingers around that.
Lewis paused to let his master collect his thoughts.
āYes, yes⦠I understand your bafflementābut, what if Amelia purposefully did that so she could be hated by you?ā
ā…Whaā?ā
āānot only to call off the engagement, but also to be hated by you.ā
āThatās⦠how should I know? Until today, Iāve never spoken to her.ā
āMoreoverādid she get burnt?ā
āPardon?ā
āThe maid who was drenched with teaādid she get burnt?ā
āā¦Why would you ask thatāāāwhat does his question mean? William recalled Lewisā serious expressionāburnt⦠thatās right. That tea should have been hot. But did her skin turn redā¦?
āIām uncertain, but she most likely didnāt.ā
āYou saw the entire processes, correct? When the tea was poured in to the cup, was it steaming?ā
āā¦If I remember correctly, there was no steam. I recall feeling odd about itāin other words, the tea was also prepared beforehand?ā
Lewis stared straight at William.
āNo doubt about it. The maid knew this would happen, hence she prepared cold tea. It wasnāt an accident when she āspilledā some onto Ameliaās dress. Everything was staged.ā
āā¦She, wants to be hated by me this much? ā¦Why?ā
William ponderedāhe was fairly confident in his likeability. He was also confident that people, in general, wanted to be liked by others. Why on earth would she want to be hated? Why, whyā¦? William scratched his head.
Lewis cleared his throat, āāthatās because Lady Amelia hates you,ā and mercilessly revealed the cold truth.
āā!!ā
William pondered even harderāHate? Me? Somebody whom she has never exchanged a single word with beforeā¦?!
The man called William Cecil had absolutely never been rejected before. It was due to his prestigious family, good personality, and admirable traits. He was respected, admired, favored, and enviedābut hated? Never!
Hence, it was a whole new experience for him. For his entire life, his environment was made to suit himānot the otherwise. It was an environment where he was accepted and well-liked. He believed he had rightly earned said environment because of his hard work.
Because of that, he lived a worry-free lifeāhe never minded what others might think or feel about him. He was at easeābecause no way someone like me would be hated ā¦right?
Who wouldāve thought that someone he had never exchange words with would hate him to such an extentā¦
I always make sure to be a gentleman to every woman I meet.
I have never cheated, nor done anything that would make them hate my guts.
But Lewis concluded that Amelia hated him. To an extent that she would do such a thing just to avoid a mere engagement. For a reason he wasnāt awareāthis is unbelievableā¦
Lost for words, Williamās expression turned difficult.
Lewis grinned at the pathetic state of his master.
āEarth to Master, oi, are you okay? Have you decided what youāre going to do yet?ā
āā¦What Iām going to do? As in? What do you mean?ā
āDid you forget already? Lady Amelia desperately wants to avoid being engaged with youāwhat shall be your response?ā
āā¦ā
William thoughtā
āAmelia Southwell. An earlās daughter, whom at the age of eight, had miraculously perfected all her lessons. Possesses a bad reputation in noble society; is praised to high heaven by servantsāthe difference is like night and day.
Under that inhuman and ruthless faƧade, what could she be hiding, I wonder?
ā¦Interesting. Very interesting.
The corner of his lips rose. āI will not withdraw the engagement. Instead, letās proceed. Besides, you want it to succeed, too, donāt you, Lewis?ā
William and Lewis stared at each other. Both eyes carried the same will, the same determination.
William, whom was interested in Ameliaās real self, and Lewis, who acknowledged Amelia as a competent lady fit to be Williamās spouseā
āsuffice to say, they reached a middle ground.
āBesides, time is aplenty.ā
William looked out of the window.
He wondered what he would find underneath that faƧade of an Ice Queenā
āa proud lion or a venomous snake? Or, perhaps, a normal person?
The aversion he had felt towards Amelia had long been forgotten. With eyes full of curiosity, William gazed at the far away sky.
***T/N: Dayum. Lewis must’ve read the spoiler somewhere…
Is Lewis a medieval Sherlock Holmes? He’s assumptions are full of convictions as if he plotted everything from the start lol. That’s just meh, a boo for Lewis hahaha
I have questions: why is Lewis so sure his conjecture is correct? & why are they insisting on going forward with the engagement? I mean if you found out someone hates you, is it normal to continue to insert yourself in their life like that? Seems like plot-reasoning to me, i.e. to make things happen – just because – so the story can move in a predictable direction. Thatās simply what Lewisās role is: to reveal what the author and we readers already know but he did so with too much conviction and āevidenceā that it made it unrealistic.
RIGHT!?!?!? OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.
LEWIS IS A GODDAMN EXPOSITIONAL TOOL
I do agree that the hands of the author are visible but at the same time, it makes sense.
For normal people, they would usually avoid the person that hates them but William is someone that has been desired and respected since birth. It became the norm for people to like him and now with the hatred of our MC, something that he would’ve never imagined alongside the fact that they never met in this life, it became something new.
All of a sudden, someone he doesn’t know hates him, it’s normal to feel curious.
Not to mention that she is someone that no one from high society had been able to get close to. He views himself as different and special because of his birth so trying to be that person who is let in is normal.
I really like the story so far and the translation work is really good!
Is this really sad?? Like is he gonna love someone else and betray her?
Only one way to figure out : keep reading.
