53.1 What are you Doing–?
The battle between Souji’s group and Io stirs various trees. The shivering of those leaves indirectly announces Io’s existence throughout the forest, which includes the venue for the [Survival Recreation].
“What the heck…?”
Upon returning from the bathroom, I find the recreation area enshrouded in silence. I’m not saying no one is around, there are people here, it’s just that they’re mindlessly standing in place.
“Ishida! Aihara-san!”
I try shaking the two while calling out their names, but they don’t respond.
“Everyone around here is the same–. Just what’s going on? It’s a bit scary.”
“The teachers are also like this, but it isn’t just people. Animals and insects are in a similar state.”
Urd and Near look around, riding from atop of my head and sticking its face out from my jacket pocket respectively.
“Near, Urd, are you two alright?”
“I’m totally fine–.”
“I too don’t have any problems.”
Near, Urd, and I are alright, so this might be a phenomena that doesn’t affect those with special abilities.
“That reminds me, where’s the class representative? Uruna-can and Owl-chan aren’t here either.”
If it’s how I think it is, then practitioners like those three should also be fine. However, regardless of where I turn my head to, I can’t catch sight of them.
“I sense the spirits of those girls coming from deep inside the forest.” (Urd)
“I see. Then, the three of them went into the forest?”
It can’t be helped. I’m worried about the class representative, but before that, uncovering the cause of this phenomena takes priority.
“jii–…”
“Master, what are you doing?”
I stare straight into Ishida’s empty eyes. Near and Urd give me doubtful looks, but I don’t pay them any mind.
“Ahre?”
How strange. If it’s some sort of ability or technique, then my learning ability should allow me to understand the details behind it. And if I’m lucky, I’ll be able to learn it too… but no matter how long I stare into Ishida’s eyes, nothing comes up.
“What is going on?”
It isn’t just with Ishida and Aihara-san, I stare into the eyes of the other student’s too… Except, no information comes up from them either.
“Goshujin-sama, what are you doing–?”
“I shall organize information on master’s hobby for you to understand. Please wait for a moment.”
“No, no, no! That’s not it! Near, you don’t need to try and understand this either!”
As there is a terrible misunderstanding, I explain that my staring into everyone’s eyes is me attempting to invoke my analysis ability.
“Oh, that’s a reli–ef. I thought you were running wild with your hobby even at a time like thi–s.”
It’s not like that.
“Pardon me, I, too, misunderstood. So then, were you able to determine the cause?”
“No, I couldn’t understand a thing…”
Could this not be a special ability or technique? Or, is this a power my learning ability can’t analyze…? An outrageous enemy like that would be terrifying. Maybe I should make some preparations just in case.
“This situation doesn’t leave much time, but practicing a spirit technique should be fine if it’s just for a bit, right? There’s something I want to try out.”
“A spirit technique?” (Near)
“That’s totally alri–ght!” (Urd)
“Then, [Blade].”
Just as Kousuke saw Junna-chan and Owl-chan do when they were battling in Odori Park, he attempts a spirit technique. He creates blades of earth and spears of water, but the power behind them is completely out of control. They launch off into the sky where they split the clouds.
“Like I thought, with Urd here, my techniques get so powerful, they’re dangerous.”
“Hold– It’s my fault!?”
“I have an idea. How about using your technique while linked to me with a spirit string?”
“Hm? You mean invoking my technique through you?”
I connect a spirit thread to Near, and then connect Near to Urd with a second one. I then use another spirit technique.
Then– – –
“Woah, I can control it perfectly now!”
“Near-chi, you’re in-credible!”
– – –Perfect, I can utilize techniques at a low output.
Near-chi?
“If you allow your magical power to flow through me, I can regulate the amount used for the technique and bring it to a level you can control.”
“I see. Sorry for rushing, but I want to do something like this with a spirit technique. Is it possible?”
I explain while sketching my idea out on the ground.
“That is a bit difficult, but I believe it is possible.”
“Ooh! In that case, can we try it out really quick? If we can pull it off, I get the feeling it will become a pretty powerful ace.”
“This will be… an ace?”
Near freezes for a moment upon hearing my explanation. Urd too seems to be in disbelief as she is quickly blinking her eyes.
“If this is possible, I definitely want to make it a reality. With it, no matter what creature I am up against, I should be able to deal with it.”
“You’re right. If it’s like you just say, it will be a powerful ace.” (Near)
“I mean, you’d be able to take down anything with room to spare, jan! Let’s make it, let’s make it!” (Urd)
“In that case, let’s head to what’s making the trees rustle after some practice. If the class representative is also headed there, then the cause for all of this might be there.”
Despite not having the time, Kousuke uses a few minutes to practice his spirit technique with the earnest Near and Urd who doesn’t feel the slightest bit of crisis.
