The Despised Lady Wishes to be Loved Translation

1.2: Ugly Witch, Moon Fairy

“I see… It seems that you really are human.”

“Yes, that’s right… I’m glad you believe me…”

The next day.

Upon arriving at the courtyard of the dormitory, Lithia called out to Geo who had arrived ahead of her. They promised to meet there. By wearing a uniform under the sunlight, Lithia finally proved she wasn’t a Moon Fairy. Afterwards, they continued to do so to this day.

The day before, Lithia looked at her own reflection in a mirror—

—Still ugly.

However, when she told that to Geo, it only strengthened his belief!

“…In other words, do fairies have a sense of aesthetics opposite those of humans?”

Thus, in order to prove that she was a human, she decided to meet him in human clothes and outside of a moon fairy’s supposed working hour.

No, wait, what am I doing? Why am I proving that I’m human?

“Do you get it now?”

“…I finally understand that rather than fairies, it’s the aesthetic sense of the nobles that are the opposite of the commoners.”

“It’s somewhat refreshing how you don’t doubt yourself for even a second.”

“But how am I mistaken? I’ve never seen someone as beautiful as you.”

Again, he lost her. Yesterday—and even today, the man didn’t hesitate to call her beautiful. Under the sun, which was brighter than the moon, he should be able to see her eye color.

“…Well, I had a phase where I thought I was cute, too. Back when I was 6-years-old, that is.”

“But I think that even now, and in the future, you’ll always be cute?”

“…Shut up.”

“Okay.”

…She might go crazy if he were to seriously say that while staring at her.

To Lithia, the word “cute” had long become irrelevant.

“I took it for granted when my family called me ‘cute.’ As such, I failed to realize just how bizarre my hair and eyes are. The realization came after I was 6-years-old. At the time, I went to a tea party with children my age.”

 “…”

“W-why are you so silent, now?”

Well, it was fine either way. Whenever Geo opened his mouth, only bizarre words came out. “You’re beautiful, you’re pretty, you’re cute—”

But this time, he earnestly stared at her. Upon being stared at in silence, Lithia instinctively tried to block his gaze with her palm.

By the way, his eyes—which she previously thought to be black, turned out to be a deep indigo.

…No, let’s leave it at that.

“Can I admire you while at it?”

“No, just listen normally! You may also speak!”

“Okay.”

…Back then, she used to be happy. She could live on while simply accepting the compliments of her family and servants; innocently believing she was cute.

However, at the tea party, she learned they were just being polite.

“Hey, the girl over there. Hair so white it resembles an old woman; eyes so yellow they’re reminiscent of vain nouveau riche gold. I’ve never seen anyone so sickening!”

Right after the children’s tea party had begun, a blond-haired, blue-eyed boy who sat atop the table pointed at her and said those words.

The boy was only 8-years-old at the time while Lithia was 6-years-old. Although she didn’t really understand his complex words, she knew she was being loathed.

…None of the participants rebuked him.

She’d have much preferred it if they had simply averted their gazes, but amongst the girls, there were those who smirked at her.

As it turned out later, the boy who mocked Lithia was the protagonist of the tea party—Andrew Lafizard.

“Ever since then, wherever I went, I was shunned. After all, His Highness himself said that I’m an ugly witch with the ashen hair of an old woman and vulgar golden eyes… He’s right, though. I’ve never seen other children with the same characteristics as me…”

Before anything else, did he just call gold vulgar despite being blond? Also, who decided that white hair is ugly? Last night, your hair looked so mysterious and beautiful under the moonlight—now, basking in the sunlight, it’s shining brilliantly. Our prince must have a screw loose…”

“Wait, hold on—!”

She couldn’t believe she initially thought he’d come to understand her. If anything, her explanation only caused him to question the prince’s sanity.

…Perhaps, even if God himself stepped forth to tell him otherwise, he wouldn’t relent.

“…It’s not just His Highness. Other people say the same, too. Even yesterday, a senior who tried to ask me for a dance ran away screaming the moment he saw my face.”

“Wasn’t he simply intimidated by your beauty?”

“As if!”

“Then, there’s something wrong with his eyes.” Geo concluded, unfazed.

Akin to an immovable rock, he was unyielding.

“Rather, I have a question. Even though he’s blind, why did you take his words for it? Why’d you think colors as pretty as these are ugly?”

Genuinely curious, Geo stared alternately between Lithia’s hair and eyes. As he asked, his eyes were so sincere that Lithia was left at a loss.

“…I don’t know. He didn’t seem to be lying.”

Geo, who tilted his head, suddenly looked around. Seemingly having found something, he began to walk quickly.

Lithia was piqued to follow him. Before long, Geo arrived at one of the many trees in the courtyard. Then, he reached for the trunk of a tree that bore many white flowers in the summer.

Unfortunately, it was autumn now, and all the white flowers had already fallen.

“…Eh!?

However, the moment Geo closed his eyes and chanted something, the branches of the tree blossomed all at once.

“How is it? They’re the same color. Beautiful, don’t you think?”

Pure white petals with golden flower cores. Once in full bloom, they swayed in the autumn wind, conjuring a lovely blizzard of flowers.

Come to think of it, she learned in class that some light-attribute magic could make plants grow rapidly. Long ago, it was said that a light magician once saved a village from famine.

“You’re right… They’re beautiful…”

“See?”

A particularly strong breeze blew, and petals fell into Lithia’s palm. As she softly brought a single petal to her chest, Lithia replied.

…Later, the scene was discovered by the dormitory manager, and ten minutes after that, the two spent their time being scolded at for tampering with the academy’s tree for no reason…
