72. The Value of my Existence
The next morning.
âI think heâs in the castle. Itâs kind of uncomfortable…â
I was walking down the corridor leading to the courtyard to feed Ralph.
Of course, I was referring to Duke Vincent.
The Duke of Ice.
He and Nigel were classmates back in their school days. He also seemed to be a very competent lord.
Nigel and Abby both said he was a good person, but I was vigilant.
âAm I overthinking this?â
âWhat are you muttering about?â
ââ!?â
I was called out to from behind.
When I turned aroundâ
ââL, Lord Vincent!?â
âWhy are you so surprised?â
I saw Vincentâs face.
When he saw me, he didnât even smile.
D-did he hear what I just said!?
When I felt my heartbeat quicken…
âI have something to ask of you today.â
Vincent approached me.
âYou seem to be Nigelâs fiancĂ©e.â
â…!â
I failed to comprehend his question.
Why did he know that?!
From Nigel, I guess. But Nigel had insisted I refrain from easily mentioning such important information…
However, I was currently in the presence of the Duke of Ice!
I didnât know what to say!
âA, are you dissatisfied with something?â
I finally opened my mouth.
Vincent scoffed.
âNothing. Itâs just that he has never been interested in women. Back in the academy, he was surrounded by ladies, but he turned everyone down. What kind of woman did he make his fiancĂ©e? Iâm just curious.â
He gradually narrowed the distance between us.
If Nigel had told him this, I could ease my worries.
But why would he bother to ask such a thing when we were alone?
While I was confused, Vincent asked casually.
âAre you worthy of being Nigelâs fiancĂ©e?â
âHuh?â
Upon suddenly being told such a thing, I could only listen.
âIâm sorry. I didnât mean anything bad. I heard about you from Nigel. It seems that youâve worked as a healer until now. Which means, you arenât an aristocrat.â
âHe said sorry.
Even so, I didnât think Vincent was the slightest bit remorseful.
âI, is being part of the aristocracy the minimal requirement to be Nigelâs fiancĂ©e?â
âI didnât say that, either. However, no matter how good of a healer you are, other people might wonder if your knowledge, wisdom, and benevolence match that of Nigelâs.â
He was being roundabout.
However, what Vincent meant to say had been painfully conveyed to me.
…He was saying I was unworthy of being Nigelâs fiancĂ©e…
Certainly, I might be naĂŻve.
I wasnât an aristocrat, but Nigel still made me his fiancĂ©e… it might look strange to the people around me.
However, my feelings for Nigel were genuine. Even so, there was no reason for me to say that.
Was it because I was overwhelmed by my feelings?
Before I realized it, I was glaring at Vincent.
He remarked, âHoo… arenât you a pretty strong woman. I donât hate that kind of woman.â
Vincent further closed the distance between us.
I kept retreatingâhowever, my back hit the wall.
Vincent trapped with the wall. His arms were at both of my sides, preventing me from escaping.
âI will praise that courage. But youâre a woman, still. If youâre too careless, youâll be eaten by a bad guy.â
Vincentâs beautiful face was right before me.
His skin was morbidly white. I got chills from his stare.
I wish I could push his body away and escape. …But it was as if my body had been frozen solid.
…Iâll be eaten by a bad guy?
What on earth was that man going to do?
âW, wonât you move aside? Doing this to a woman isnât very praiseworthy.â
âKukuku, youâre still strong. Iâm liking you more and more.â
I donât want to be liked by you!
Vincent grinned.
I felt like I was being stared at by a snake.
When I was nervous…
âOi, what are you guys doing?â
Vincent and I turned towards the voice.
âD, Douglas!â
âI was wondering how long youâd take to come to the courtyard, so I came to fetch you. Are you guys in the middle of something?â
When I saw Douglas, it was as if my body had finally been freed from an enchantment. I could move again.
I bent over, left Vincent, and ran to Douglas.
âWe arenât! Donât say things that can easily be misunderstood!â
âOh, thatâs right, you have Nigel, after all.â
Douglas grinned.
Although he was always causing trouble, he was somehow more dependable that day.
âHmm… red hair, dark skin. Could you be the man Nigel mentioned?â
Vincent wasnât deterred and looked at Douglas with interest.
âWell, this is all for today.â
Vincent turned around.
âBut donât forget thisâwhat it means for a naĂŻve girl like you to stand beside Nigel. Although the outcome might have been different if everyone were to know your true worth.â
Finally, Vincent left us for good.
The moment he disappeared, my shoulders sunk.
âPhew… Douglas, thank you.â
âI donât know why youâre grateful, but youâre welcome.â
Douglas was nonchalant.
âThat guy was the aforementioned Duke of Ice. Although heâs handsome, he carries an aura different from Nigelâs. Anyway, what the heck isââ
ââPlease listen!â
He gently rubbed my back.
âIt looked like things were starting to get difficult. Talking to that overbearing man must have strained you. I understand your feelings well.â
âI, isnât he!? That person is really terrible…!â
âBut, why is he terrible, though? It seems to me that heâs merely worried about Eliane.â
âW, worried!? Why and how did you come to such a conclusion!?â
âHeâs pretty aggressive for a human, but if he were a dragon, instead…â
Suddenly, Douglas mentioned something about, âdragonââwhich shouldnât matter.
I wondered if Vincent hated me?
He said that I was unworthy, naĂŻve, and didnât suit Nigel…
He told me a lot of things…
What should I do to be recognized by such a person?
It wasnât like I could just confess that I was a former saint… what should I do?
âWhatâs wrong, Eliane? You look unhappy.â
âI donât know anymore!â
I was angry and turned away from Douglas.
Maybe, it wasnât Vincentâs words.
Maybe the reason his words had pierced me this painfully was because deep down, I was also concerned about my relationship with Nigel.
***T/N: …Y’know, that’s what she said, but judging from her attitudes in the previous chapters, I feel like the reason she desperately wants to prove her worth is because for the first time since forever, instead of spewing, ‘You’re so amazing! You’re the greatest healer!’ and insta-simping for her, A MERE IKEMEN CAST, WHOSE SOLE PURPOSE IS TO PRAISE HER TO HIGH HEAVEN, DARES TO NOT DO EXACTLY THAT, AND EVEN TALKED HER DOWN, WHICH GREATLY RUFFLED HER FEATHERS (lmao to the point she’s ready to reveal ‘IM TEH SAINT!!1111’ just to gain his reverence). So yea, it isn’t for Nigel. Besides, Nigel who? I almost forgot he plays a significant role because Author loves to shelf him in favor of her future studs.
Also, I’m not giving any brownie points to Vincent for popping the Mary Sue’s bubble, here, dude’s rapey as fuck.

Vincent is concerned for Nigel because people will be both suspicious and disdain someone with no qknown history tying themselves to the most important figure in their country. So far, in this front, Nigel is the only one fighting for her future right as Queen. So being the good friend that he is, he wanted to know Eliane’s worth and true personality. If she had fallen for his small game of seduction, then she is a thot unworthy of his friend. So once he saw her fighting spirit aimed at him, despite the rumors and her apparent wariness of him, he knew that he need to stoke that flame higher. So he told her to fight for her right to be by Nigel’s side. In another word, she need to show the whole court of nobles what she can bring to the table as the future Queen. Its business as usual. The author is being somewhat realistic in this unlike more shoujo romance. After all, being a Queen is to dip her feet into politics and politics worked like a business transaction in a much larger scale with higher stakes. Even if she does all the stuff she did, if it is unknown, none of the aristocratea will respect and Nigel will be troubled by their demands in the future because of her.
Vincent-sama, I am falling for you. Take responsibility! Now pick your weapon of choice and fight Zhongli-sama!!
Someone who corners another’s betrothed like that deserves to be popular with those on the other side of the solar system from their strike zone. Not cool Vincent, go get stalked by a dozen preteen yandere ojousama types.
yeah, the story has officially gone from tropey to creepy…
Uh so just because he is handsome he can just kabedon someone? And she just freeeeze bcs he’s too beautiful? Who’s going to come next? An angel?
Feels rather strange, but the way Eliane just can’t keep her distance from other men irks me. Too many stories with female main characters make them weak to such advances, as if they HAVE to follow the harem trope, even if in the end they don’t. I hope this author doesn’t focus his work on such a weak plan.
Thanks for the chapter! Awesome translation! May God bless you!
Imma blame the author for endlessly adding more ikemens instead of developing her characters
