14.2 To be a Witch (3)
āShe hasnāt done anything ā¦yet.ā
āThen, for what reason did you call her a bother?ā
The kid ponders about Harijās question and immediately goes silent. Cat has got his tongue.
āPeople are weak, hence, they fear things they donāt know.ā Harij then turns towards Roze. Roze becomes tense; for some reason, she desperately wants to avoid his gaze.
āCan I tell them about it?ā
āHuh?ā Roze doesnāt know what heās referring to.
āThe potions Ms. Witch has been makingācan I tell them about it? Or, would it cause you trouble instead?ā
āā¦Itās fine.ā Roze answers with a small, but firm voice.
After all, witches donāt lie. It wonāt cause her anything even if people were to know about those potions. Roze isnāt bothered about them.
After receiving her consent, Harij asks the villagers without hesitation;
āDo you plant crops in the village?ā
āYes, we do⦠Wheat and vegetables.ā The adults answer, even though they seem confused.
āThen, do you use insecticide?ā
āObviously. We burn it and the smoke repels the insects.ā
āDo you put compress on your back?ā
āIndeed. Although it was considered a luxury back when, fortunately, it has been easier to obtain medicines as of late, even people like us can enjoy those benefits.ā
āāWell, most of those medicines are made by Ms. Witch. Iām not saying that every medicine came from herābut it seems like some of you have been helped by Ms. Witchās medicine.ā
The adults stare at each other with uncomfortable expressions. They grow silent, unable to say anything.
āItās natural to fear the unknownābut using said fear to justify hitting an innocent person is the worst thing someone could doānow, apologize.ā Harij says, staring at the children with severity.
Most of them cry and beg for forgiveness, but one rebellious boy appears unconcerned.
āThen I have no choice but to make you reflectāin the lake.ā
Harij lifts the boyā
āāWaaaah!!! Iām sorry, Iām sorry, Iām sorryā¦!!ā
Roze also rushes to Harij, thinking heāll really throw the boy into the lake.
āM-Mr. Customer, it seems like the boy has understood, already, and I, too, am fine with it, soāā
āNo, itās still not enough.ā āIām sorryā!!!ā
After the thirty-sixth, āIām sorry,ā he finally releases the boy. The boy now clings to one of the adults, his face wet with tears.
Watching such children and adults, Harij says with a harsh voice.
āNot only witches, people too, are capable of evil. Those people ought to be punished for what they did. Those who have, and those who havenātāyou shouldāve been able to discern it with your own eyes. After all, youāre an adult. Adults are supposed to make good decision.ā
The adults look guilty and bow, before taking their children away.
āIām sorry, it took longer than I thought it would. You must be cold.ā Without any hesitation, Harij removes his cloak and wraps it around Rozeāitās Roze who panics instead; because Harijās cloak will get dirty with mud.
āMr. Custoāā¦ā
āItās fine. Hurry up and wear it.ā
Roze has been pondering about this for a whileābut it seems like Harij is used to giving ordersā¦
Itās kind of interesting. Thinking about it, her mindāwhich was tangledāseems to clear instantly.
āThanks for lending this to meāah, and for earlier, tooā¦ā
Back then, if she was alone, she wouldnāt have been able to change anything.
She would be too scared to get angry or sad. In the end, she would probably just endure and drag her messy and muddy appearance back to her hut.
The stigma surrounding the āWitch of the Lakeā that has been there ever since her grandma was still alive, but now that she thinks about it ā¦it might be possible to put an end to it.
āNo problem. Thankfully, you didnāt get hit much.ā Harij helps Roze wipe away the mud sticking to her body.
Roze feels like Harij is helping her clean the way he would a pet, yet she still lets him do it, regardless. After the moisture dries off, the mud becomes crisp. Every time Harij strokes her cheeks, the mud falls off.
āDo you have bath inside your house?ā
āThereās no such thing, unfortunately.ā
āNo problem, you can use mine.ā
āThere is a problemāā
āāletās go, Iāll help boil the water.ā
āIf itās a joke, you have to stop now!ā
After Roze has said that, silence returns between them.
She canāt afford to stare back at Harij, otherwise, she wonāt be able to make a firm decision.
āā¦W-what is it?ā
āWhenever Ms. Witch is disturbed, or troubled in general, you can let me know. Iāll do everything in my power to help you.ā
Some might be unable to accept the fact that their day-to-day medicines are made by a Witch. There might be an unfavorable outcome in the future.
āThanks, but no need.ā
Roze refuses.
āIām truly glad for your help, but in the futureāā
āDo you think you can handle it alone?ā
āIndeed. After all, this entire time, Iāve been doing everything myself.ā
āit might not yield the best result, but at the very least, Iām doing something about it. Iāll figure something out and the rest should be fineā¦
She canāt rely on someone foreverāshe wonāt go far that way.
Harij frowns.
It might also because Roze isnāt used to receiving otherās kindness.
The bottom line is;
She doesnāt want to be indebted to Harij more than she already is.
āIt doesnāt even matter whether sheās a witch or notāitās wrong to throw mud at people.ā
No one treats Roze like a person, much else their equal.
Only Harij treats her like a person, regardless of her identity as a witch.
Since seven years ago, Harij, too, never changed.
Her heart gradually warms up.
Roze truly thinks that his words alone would suffice, even if she has to spend the rest of her life alone.
āThank you very much for today.ā
āIāll finish the Love Potion as soon as I can.
Roze decides so and bows her head.
A week goes by, in which Roze doesnāt sleep at all to finish the last adjustment.
Thus, the potion is finishedāthe Love Potion requested by Harij.
**T/N: auauaua *excuses the translator as she fangirls over Harij
Hey! Tien treats her as a person too. Dude even tried to dress her up. (I guess this counts)
Awww Roze has been enduring the harassment alone this whole time ?
*fangirling with you
I donāt know what to say soā¦..insert Chewbacca noises here
Thanks for the chapter
Hahahaha how do you find Harij?
Now that I have collected my thoughts I just want to say “Harij just marry my girl Roze” in Wookie.
Why can’t he just realize his feelings……AHHHHHHH it really makes me want to shout in Wookie
He is an upright man. Hopefully not too dense so we can eat more sweetness from.these two
Harij is probably the most likable out of all the 582849 MLs in the novels Iām reading. I just want him and Rose to be happy!! (Together!!)
She finished it already ?? I wonder what will happen …
I would have found it more likeable if he was able to mediate the kids and the witch because as it is right then i would personally still think the witch is a bad person as far as kids are concerned seeing and experiencing are believing.
