46. Encounter with Darkness
Liliana guides Suimei through the city.Ā She glances behind herself every so often to speak with him.Ā Her attitude is curt, but without any hostilityā
āYouāre actually pretty gentle, arenāt you?ā
āDid you say, something?ā
āNo, itās nothing.āĀ Suimei, now that heās on the correct path to the library, decides itās question time for Liliana.Ā He asks despite not knowing how sheāll feel about it.Ā āāSo why did you come here?Ā Did something happen?ā
Liliana takes a moment before answering with a straightforward, āā¦.Patrol.ā
āYouāre pretty motivated about your job, but does that sort of task fall within the jurisdiction of the military police?ā
āThat is correct.Ā You are well, informed.Ā Recently, incidents have been occurring, within the Imperial Capital.Ā Unfortunately, we are low on personnel.ā
āAh- you mean those coma incidents?ā
āThat is correct.Ā Try not to, get yourself involved.Ā Do not walk, alone around such places.ā
Suimei deducts the hidden meaning within Lilianaās words.Ā āIn other words, those incidents occur within the upper class district.ā
āā¦ā¦..ā
āHello?Ā Am I wrong?ā
Liliana doesnāt answer.Ā She just continues walking forward without sparing Suimei a glance.Ā She was fine talking with him earlier, but now silence.Ā Thereās no way I guessed it, right?Ā
Before Suimei can smooth over the sudden awkwardness, Liliana says, āā¦..Ā I would like to, ask a question.ā
āYeah?ā
āDo you, not fear me?āĀ She gives a slight turn of her head and presses him with her unique stare.
āHuh?Ā No, not really?Ā Whereād that come from?ā
āEven though I, threatened you earlier, you talk to me with, complete ease.Ā Others, either freeze up in fear, or attack me, like earlier.Ā Why is that?ā
āWell, I was a bit nervous, but arenāt you younger than me?Ā How could I do any of those things?Ā That would be too embarrassing.ā
Someone who possess a lot of magical power can establish their dominion over an area.Ā Anyone within that domain becomes a foreign object and is subject to a strong psychological attack.Ā Thatās why the most effect method of intimidation is by expanding oneās magical power.Ā Once a person succumbs to their fear, the battle is over.Ā Lilianaās Psychic Acid was quite powerful, but her partner wasnāt an ordinary person.
Liliana looks ahead with a huff.Ā āā¦I see.Ā You are, a strange one.ā
Someone might think sheās creepy just from her physical appearance.Ā That person would probably get nervous too once her military title is considered.Ā But thereās no way that should be enough to make anyone freeze up from fear.
āI mean, it was intense. Ā Iāll admit it.ā
āWell, good enough.Ā A direct superior taught me, that such an impression is essential, for soldiers.Ā Soldiers must never be made light of.Ā Those trained for, warfare must be feared.ā
Suimei sighs at Lilianaās confession and looks up towards the sky.
āLiar.ā
āā¦ā¦ā
āDo you really believe that?Ā That oppressive force you surround yourself with is for your own protection.Ā Itās nothing more than a shield.Ā Or am I wrong?ā
āWhat makes, you believe that?ā
āYou react so much to your surroundings that youāre pointlessly pushing everyone away through your words and actions.Ā Even in the customs office, your default method was oppressive intimidation.Ā āWell, that, and it’s also my intuition speaking.ā
āā¦..ā
āYou refuse to let others get close to you the same way a dog barks when someone gets near.Ā Tell me, why are you so hostile to everyone around you?Ā Not everyone wants to harm you like those guys from before.ā Ā They round a corner as Suimei finishes his question and come across a fancy signboard advertising a restaurantās dishes with attractive phrases.Ā Nearby are children playing with a ball, but for some reason, upon noticing them, they run away.Ā Theyāre like herbivores cringing in fear upon sensing the approach of their natural enemy or baby spiders scurrying away to safety.
Liliana watches the scene unfold.Ā āā¦.I do not believe, an answer is necessary anymore.Ā However, if you require an answer, I am a soldier.Ā You are a citizen.Ā Those are our positions, nothing less, nothing more.ā
āI thought it would be fine if you acted less intenseā¦.Ā But I was just meddling too much, sorry.ā
While Suimei apologizes, Liliana mutters, āā¦.Name,ā
āHuh?ā
āYour name.Ā I do not know, your name.Ā For only you to, know my name is unfair.Ā Promptly inform me.ā
Suimei realizes he never introduced himself and says, āSuimei Yakagi.ā
āShuime Hakagi.ā
āā¦ā¦..ā
āIs something wrong?Ā Shumei-ā
āThatās wrong, try again.Ā Itās Suimei Yakagi.ā
āShu⦠Su⦠Suimei Yakagi.Ā Like that?ā
Suimei nods, telling Liliana that her pronunciation passes.Ā He has no choice but to make a wry smile when she says, āYou have, a peculiar name.ā
They round another corner and come across a man dressed in an immaculate military uniform with a sword at his waist.Ā Even though spots of grey powder his black all back hair, the man is still in the prime of his life.
Suimei recognizes the man from when he and Lefille were on the way to the church.Ā That single encounter was enough for her to recognize that he is a sword master.
Liliana freezes upon seeing the man.Ā She stiffens as though a string is being snapped taut.
Is he an acquaintance of hers?
The man also stops upon seeing Liliana.Ā He then approaches her with a strict expression.Ā āLiliana, what are you doing here?ā
āColonelā¦ā
While that confirms Suimeiās guess, Liliana is too surprised to respond.Ā The shock of encountering him places a heavy strain upon her heart.
āAnswer me, Liliana.ā
āI- I am investigating the case, you mentioned occurring in this area.ā
āThe case I mentioned?Ā That is not something you need to concern yourself with.Ā That responsibility falls to other people.ā
āIt does?ā
The colonel reprimands Liliana with a piercing stare. āEverything will be fine as long as you listen to what I say.Ā Just behave yourself and donāt do anything excessive outside of your military duties.ā
Lilianaās shoulders droop upon receiving the high-handed rebuke. āā¦..I understand.āĀ Displeasing the man has left her crestfallen.Ā However, the manās tone and words are undoubtedlyā
āAnd you?Ā Why are you with Liliana?ā
āEh?Ā Oh, sheās showing me how to get to the library.Ā She saved me since I still donāt know my way around.ā [1]
Liliana gaps.Ā āAhā¦āĀ [2]
āYou are not from the Imperial Capital?ā
āIāve just recently moved here.ā
The man looks Suimei over at the simple response.Ā He studies him from the tips of his toes to the top of his head and closes his eyes to consider the situation.
Is he suspicious of me?Ā Did he realize there isnāt anything suspicious?Ā
The man takes a breath to clear his baseless doubts and speaks with a composed voice, āI see.Ā Due to recent developments, the Imperial Capital isnāt very safe at the moment.Ā Considering your difficulty navigating the roads, avoid going out on your own at night if you donāt need to.ā
āThank you for your concern.ā
āThe Imperial Library is straight down this road.Ā It will be on your left.ā
Does he want me to continue alone from here?Ā Suimei bows his head towards the man and gives his thanks with the same respect he would to a teacher.
The man then turns towards Liliana and says, ā.ā¦Letās go.ā
āUnderstood.ā
Liliana does not argue and obediently follows the man down a small road.Ā Her manner of walking is just as straight and controlled as his.Ā Their shadows vanish without leaving any evidence like a cloud of smoke.
āI didnāt get to buy her any candyā¦āĀ Suimei speaks those words after a few moments.Ā However, both of them reside within the same Imperial Capital, so there will be plenty of opportunity to run into each other again.Ā Even if it is a one-sided promise, he swears to himself that he will fulfill it.
ā¦..Liliana told the colonel she was investigating.Ā Turns out she wasnāt just doing a patrol.Ā There were some parts to the conversation that werenāt very clear, but in the end, Itās none of my business.
—–One day Cute Star, one day—–
āThat took way too long-āĀ Suimei says while cracking his neck and rolling a shoulder as he walks out the Imperial Libraryās entrance.Ā Because he was delayed in his arrival, he used todayās visit to locate the shelves housing texts of interest. Ā The library within the Empire has a wide collection of books.Ā It so vast that it is considered peerless among the three nations.Ā Suimei stares up at the sky while considering the magical tools heāll need to bring during his next visit.
The sky is already dark.Ā The bright, waxing moon looks like it is being inhaled by the night sky.Ā The sight tells him how late he is in returning home.
Thatās when he hears a door opening behind him.Ā āOopsā pardon me, Yakagi-kun.ā
āAh, Librarian-san.āĀ Coming out from within the library is Romion, the elf who guided him through the building.Ā Heās dressed in the library staff uniform and, as expected of elves, has long ears.Ā āThank you for your help, today.ā
āThink nothing of it.Ā Iām still new here so guiding you made for good practice.āĀ Romion gives a modest reply.
Suimei adopts a cheerful tone in response.Ā āEven though you were flawless?ā
āAs an elf, Iām very confident in my memory.āĀ Romion says while tapping his forehead with his index finger.
In other words, the elves in this world have strong memory?Ā It makes sense once Suimei considers how long they live.Ā Their life spans are so long, theyāre incomparable to humans.Ā Strong memory must be essential for them.
Romion says after that exchange, āWell then, Iāll be taking my leave,ā and turns away.
Suimei also decides to return home.Ā However, after thinking about it, he realizes he doesnāt know how.Ā He resigns himself to retracing his footstepsā¦.. Something happens just outside the upper class district.
āHuh?ā
He noticed it while walking.Ā There is no light in front of him.Ā The situation is almost as if the upcoming neighborhood is sealed off in darkness from the rest of the charming city scape.Ā This isnāt normal.Ā The waxing moon was shining in the sky when he left the library.Ā Modern buildings capable of blocking out the sky donāt exist in this world and no shadow is being cast over him either.Ā However, this type of darkness cannot exist without something to block the light.
Suimei feels a faint trace of magic power.Ā A barrier?Ā No, this world hasnāt developed the concept of barriersā hmm.Ā Did they create this darkness by weakening the light within a restricted area?Ā Or did they absorb the light with somethingā¦?
Suimei searches his surroundings for the operating procedure controlling the phenomena thatās covering the upper class residential district in darkness.Ā Could it be the darkness before dawn?Ā No, this situation is too unnatural for that.Ā So then, what is this?Ā Something is wrong, he can smell it.
āHe- Help me!Ā Help, pleaseā¦ā
āHmm?ā
Someone runs out of the darkness begging for help.Ā His gasping breath reveals that heās almost at his limit.Ā Whatās happening?
āYou!Ā Please!Ā Save me!ā
āHuh?Ā Sure, but whatās going on?āĀ The man trips and falls flat on his face as Suimei asks.Ā Suimei then holds out his hand to the man while asking, āAre you alright?ā
The man ignores Suimeiās hand and twists around to points at something behind him.Ā āThat!Ā Itās afterā¦ā
āThat? ā!āĀ Suimei senses a heavy amount of magical power.Ā Maybe itās because of how close they are, but some magical power seeps out of the darkness.
Thatās when a section of the darkness cuts away to unveil a short figure dressed in ink black robes.
āHi!Ā Hiiiiiii!āĀ The man backs away without getting up, literally dragging his butt across the road.
āā¦ā¦ā¦ā
The black robed figureās eyes are covered by a low hood.Ā Nothing is revealed by the outfit.Ā Is that guy staring at the man shrieking for his life?Ā Suimei, even though he doesnāt know whatās going on, steps out in front of the man and narrows his gaze at the black robed figure.
This guy?Ā Suimei considers if the figure before him is the one responsible for the coma incidents within the Imperial Capital.Ā Upon considering the circumstances, he assumes himself correct.
Suimei, having been dragged into this situation, feels himself getting pumped for a fight.Ā The black robed figure, perhaps having a different idea, vanished within the darkness.
āI- Iām savedā¦ā¦ā
āWhat⦠just happened?ā
The man uses his remaining strength to prop himself by his arms and stares.Ā Suimei alone thinks about that mysterious figure.Ā Was that guy targeting him?Ā Then, did that guy pull back because someone unrelated showed up?Ā
T/N:Ā Ā Ā Ā When the colonel asked Suimei why he was with Liliana, I just pictured him saying, āI offered to buy her candy if she showed me around.āĀ The situation didnāt call for him to act smug, but with everything heās done so far, I can totally see him doing that.Ā But, if anyoneās paying attention, Felmenia was supposed to show up around the end of this chapter according the LN.Ā Sure, she shows up in the beginning of the next chapter, but itās still a difference.Ā Yet another reason why Iām translating from the beginning of this chapter instead of where Sky left off.
More importantly, can you guys believe it?Ā Iām finally updating within a week and posting on Friday!Ā This upcoming week is a holiday, so donāt expect an update during it.Ā Donāt worry, youāll hear from me again soon, probably, assuming nothing bad happens, and assuming the next chapter isnāt ridiculously hard.
See you then,
Gandire
1 Suimei doesnāt actually say library here, he just says āshowing me around.āĀ However, this is the only place he could have specified this, so Iām making an editorial decision and tweaking it sentence.
[2]Ā The text doesnāt actually specify who this is, but from the context, it being Liliana makes the most sense.
thanks for chapter,I hope it will always update every week until it reaches the new chapter…
★
I was read the LN version of this series. can someone tell me the difference between both? or should I reread from the beginning again? thanks
In the light novel version, Suimei saves Felmenia from an evil wizard in the first volume. This can also be read in the manga. Another huge difference will occur within the next chapter.
Saw the new chapter of the manga and decided to see ifthere were new ones of the novel… added your rss feed to my subscriptions so I don’t miss the next one š
Thanks for the chapter, keep up the good work!
Thanks, although, for the most part, still not at the level where we can call any of this “new.”
Idk why not so many people are reading this, I think its good.
@Gandire Have you tried alt 9773 for a filled star and alt 9774 for a hollow star.? (On mobile atm so I don’t have an alt button)
I didn’t know, thanks
Didn’t work T.T
ā got it!
alt 9733 (sorry for the typo above)
I’m using EN (US) for my windows keyboard settings and NL (DU) also works, I can type it into word 2007 and copy paste it to here.
When I try it in the comment section here it gives me the clover symbol ā£
Will report back once I find a solution š
I believe that you’re able to use html codes in a WordPress post. Try inserting one of these (tested them in basic html file)
★
★
And I’m stupid (off course I can also use html in comments)
&.#9733;

Remove the dots after the ampersand
Sorry for spamming your comment section!
So, I tried and it didn’t work. After some research, turns out my laptop can’t use alt key. But it does come with a character map! Thanks for your help. *bows*
the last codes with the ampersand have nothing to do with alt. It’s wordpress converting the html code straight to the picture š
Hey, I got it, awesome, thanks! ★:
★. ★
I see it worked in the other comment, I’m glad that I could help for once ★
Time for me to go back to radio silence for a couple of years š
