51.2 Charlotte: Chapter 6, Episode 4
Charlotte wasn’t even respected as an individual in this kingdom, let alone as a daughter.
No love was shown to her.
“That’s why I intended to weaken Lymore’s national power so that it wouldn’t be able to reject marriage proposals from other countries. Since my happiness won’t come true in this kingdom, I have no choice but to marry abroad, don’t I? Or what? Do I have to devote my entire life to such a kingdom?”
As the crown princess, Charlotte wasn’t properly evaluated. She was constantly compared to the king. No matter what she’d achieve in the future, everyone would downplay it as ‘natural’—simply unbearable.
Her patriotism had been shattered long ago. The meager sense of responsibility that had held her together was shattered by Frederick’s inconsiderate words.
“I wanted to ruin that man’s reputation, too. That terrible king who is worshipped by the people and his subjects as perfect, to the point it’s almost fanatical.”
This kingdom was no short of abnormal. They worshipped the king as if he were a god. As long as he was king, the kingdom was safe, without anything to worry about. Since the former king was the worst and most foolish of all, Frederick, who rebuilt the kingdom, was revered by everyone.
“In the end, I’m nothing compared to him, so there’s no way I could’ve outdone him… Regardless, his reputation must’ve been damaged. He failed to train his successor. The first was rebellious, the second incompetent. He raised us like this. This is undoubtedly a huge blunder—surely, the only one in his life.”
The weaking of this kingdom’s power wasn’t her main objective. One of her true motives was harassment, retaliation, and revenge. It was hilarious and delightful because she had succeeded.
“Ah, I feel so amazing.” Charlotte smiled refreshingly.
“Your Highness…”
It was the first time Quentin had seen Charlotte so relaxed. At the same time, he became painfully aware of how far her heart had drifted away from him. And they were the ones who had made her that way.
“They said that because I’m that man’s daughter, it’s only natural that I should be perfect. But that man is the son of a tyrant, you know? He may be revered as a hero, but he’s undoubtedly the son and grandson of tyrants. The qualities of a king can’t be inherited through bloodline alone, and he has proven just that.”
A hero born of a tyrant. Frederick was the most convincing and famous example in the kingdom that bloodline wasn’t everything.
“That man was special. He was raised under a tyrant yet had the qualities of a king. But just as he didn’t inherit the traits of a tyrant, I didn’t inherit the qualities of an outstanding king. Yet, everyone refuses to see that—to see me.”
The result was Charlotte the Rebel. Unfortunately, the great king wasn’t a great father.
“Hey, Quentin, do you know what I like?”
“…Things you like?”
Quentin was confused by the random question and asked again. He wondered why she was asking him such a thing now.
“Food, colors, things—anything is fine.” Charlotte urged.
Quentin decided to ponder about it for the time being. He searched through his memories and came up with an answer.
“You like nuts… and pink flowers, right?” Quentin answered without much hesitation.
Charlotte grinned.
“Those are all things Juliet likes.”
“!”
Her smile was joyful, and at the same time, full of disdain for Quentin.
