50.2 Charlotte: Chapter 6, Episode 3
Quentin frowned, unable to comprehend her words. Such a predictable and boring reaction.
They were the cause of it all, but of course, they’d never have imagined it. Even after she vented her frustrations to Juliet, this was still the case.
She had already told Juliet, but she’d explain it clearly and thoroughly here too, all for the sake of fools who only saw others as tools to be exploited.
“Do you know how much effort I put in as that man’s successor? I couldn’t memorize and execute everything I saw and hear just once like that man. I’m not particularly smart or athletic, and I’m clearly inferior to him. However, I wasn’t allowed to be complacent. So, I had to study hard, to the point of sacrificing sleep, and perform my duties—and finally, I was able to pass.”
A position where even a single mistake wasn’t allowed—such was the crown princess of this kingdom.
As the successor of the perfect king, there were too many demands on her, making it a suffocating and painful position. Her abilities were far from enough to meet the rising expectations. The only way to make up for the deficit was to work hard, and even then, she was truly on the edge.
She was pushed to the edge of a cliff, forced to produce results. She had to be as perfect as the king.
No one could understand how difficult that was.
“But what about that girl? Her education is still poor, and even though her health has improved, she neglects her responsibilities as a princess. She’s far inferior to me, and lacks the self-awareness and ability to be a princess, yet instead of scolding her, she’s praised and even encouraged. She’s always spoiled and plays around, without ever questioning why she’s allowed to do so.”
Something like that shouldn’t be tolerated.
“‘Irresponsible’ is an understatement. ‘Pitiful, sickly girl’? Don’t mess with me!”
Charlotte had no freedom. Even in a private family setting, she was only allowed to be a princess. Not a single one of her whims was granted. Even merely talking back was met with severe reprimand.
By contrast, Juliet was different.
“She had more free time than I, a healthy crown princess. She was loved and protected.”
Quentin was shocked by the voice that burned with quiet anger and resentment. That reaction irritated Charlotte.
Charlotte and Juliet. The first princess and the second princess were treated so differently. What else could one call it but unfair?
“In addition to my duties as the crown princess, I had to manage the castle as a queen, the work of the irresponsible second princess, and the work that you—my supposed secretary—postponed because you were busy with Juliet. I’m being forced to do the work of more than three people, even though the queen’s duties were supposed to be shared equally between me and Juliet. Because of that, I never had a single day of rest and instead had to cut down on my own sleep to get everything done.”
She couldn’t even take a half-day for rest.
“Compared to that, how much freedom did she have? There was a time when she went on a trip to a resort as an inspection. At that time, I was also forced to do that man’s work, and I pushed to the verge of collapsing. It’s a wonder I didn’t.”
That trip was carried out because of Juliet’s selfishness. Juliet wanted Charlotte to come along, but the trip was scheduled to last more than a week. As such, there wasn’t enough time for the crown princess and the king to go at the same time. So, Charlotte had to stay behind and even ended up assuming Frederick’s duties.
“She’s always playing around while I had to clean up after her. Acts of charity are the only thing she can do, but even then, all she does is visit orphanages and hospitals, look after the children, and distribute food. She doesn’t even try to think about fundamental ways to solve poverty. All she has ever done was say, ‘we need new policies,’ because she felt sorry for them, and left the rest to others.
“She acts impulsively, without thinking about the consequences. Then, she rushes people, messing up the schedules, which just increases the workload—and I was the one who had to deal with it. She’s never even scolded for it. On the contrary, if I didn’t clean up after her, I’d have been criticized for being lazy.”
Charlotte had worked non-stop. Even Frederick days of rest, but she apparently didn’t need one, because that’d be lazy of her.
“You, who seriously think this is natural, are narrow-minded blind fools. Just because I’m the crown princess—just because I’m her sister, I’m being exploited like a slave for the sake of that girl. No one can survive in such an environment. I sold my kingdom and am now in prison. If I had grown up normally, do you think this would’ve happened?”
Charlotte’s fatigue, both physical and mental, had long since exceeded its limits. Her senses had gone haywire. Contrary to the content of the message, which was by no means cheerful, Charlotte was smiling.
“Do you understand how it feels to clean up after her while already being overwhelmed? You don’t, do you? Because you think it’s natural to support her. You don’t question her, who’s greedily enjoying her privileges without fulfilling her royal duties.”
Her smile was so enchanting to the eye.
“If I had loved her, things would be different… but what is there to love about that spoiled brat?”
Her narrowed eyes were filled with a sense of amusement and contempt for the person in front of her, others, and everything in this kingdom.
