249: The Battle Maiden Wants to Study Abroad (12)
The white school building overlooking the hill was set with mountains behind, giving the impression of a castle dominating the town.
Jill stood upright and gulped. Then, she spoke to Rho who was still inside her bag.
“Rho, you’re a lizard demon. You understand that, right?”
“Ukkyu!”
Do lizards even squeal?
Feeling anxious, she called out to Sauté, who had appeared from the opposite side of Rho.
“You’re a chicken demon. I’m counting on you and Haddy!”
“Chirp.”
“Alright, let’s go.”
Let’s just think about things beyond my control later. By living here, she should be able to learn the current situation.
Storing the map, Jill glanced at the pamphlet in her hand. She was looking for the teachers’ office. She also checked the date and time on the note that was tucked inside. The clock she saw before entering the school building showed that it was ten minutes before the meeting. She’d be arriving in time.
“Uhm… I guess I should go greet Professor Roger Bruder.”
It was the same name as the recipient of the letter of introduction. The fact that it was written by Vissel made her feel a bit wary, though. But being suspicious all the time wasn’t good. In the first place, wasn’t Jill also lying? In the same way, the other person might’ve been deceived by him.
Let’s see. I came here to learn magic that can’t be learned in the Rave Empire. I was raised in Radea. I inherited my magical power from my mother who came from Kratos. I don’t know who my father is, and I no longer have any family.
Jill confirmed her current setting in mind. The students around her, wearing school uniforms, seemed taken aback at her. But Jill, who’d recently been surrounded by adults, was a bit excited to see boys and girls her own age.
It’d be nice to make some friends.
She wanted to avoid a scheming person like her former aide, Lawrence, though. But just as she put her hand on the door to the teachers’ office, someone called out to her.
“Are you lost, My Lady?”
He was a tall man. He donned his uniform in a cool, casual style, seemingly prioritizing ease of movement. His dark brown hair was messy and ruffled. On closer inspection, his chiseled features seemed well-mannered.
Above all, what stood out to Jill was his refined magical power.
…This man is strong. He’s probably on par with Princess Elynsia?
In the Rave Empire, people with magical power were rare. As expected of the prestigious La Baia Military Academy!
“Where are your parents? Are you looking for your brother or sister in this school?”
“Oh, no! I’m not lost. I’m looking for Professor Roger…”
“Huh? That’s me.”
Oh, it’s him?
Jill stepped forward in front of Roger, thinking that there were some wonderful coincidences.
“I didn’t know that, my apologies. My name is Jill.”
“Eh? Someone as young as you?”
“Yes! I’ll be in your care!”
As she bowed, Rho and Sauté came out of the bag and bowed with her. Jill introduced the well-behaved beast and the bird.
“These are my familiars, Rho and Sauté. In the bag, I also have a teddy bear, which is my magical tool! Also, this is my letter of introduction!”
She took out a letter of introduction that Vissel had prepared. But Roger was too stunned to take it.
“…Er?”
“Well… it’s definitely a lizard and a chicken magical beast… Uh, your family… don’t you have a guardian?”
Seeing Roger’s obvious confusion, Jill panicked, wondering if she needed a guardian.
“No, my family… uhm, well, my brother is here, but he’s busy with work!”
Let’s just leave it at that.
Fortunately, her gold ring was hidden from view.
Her brother came to the Rave Empire for work, while her sister was studying abroad. There, for a hastily made-up story, it sounded like a good setting.
But Roger frowned even more.
“I… I see… So, then, it’s only the young lady…?”
“Yes. Nice to meet you.”
First impression was important. Roger suddenly burst out laughing at Jill’s clear answer.
“I see. So the higher-ups have finally given up on everything… What a disaster.”
“H-huh?”
“No, sorry. I’m not in a position to say anything to a young lady. I didn’t mean to cause you any trouble, I was just surprised at the way they handled things—leaving it to such a child…”
“…I’m not that young. Although, I’ll admit that I’m growing at a slow pace. Still, I’m better than the rest of the students!”
When she said this in a playful manner, Roger smiled.
“I can tell that you’re an excellent magic user. Judging by the state of the beasts, you’re certainly different from the teachers we’ve had so far… Actually, maybe this will help the students pay attention?”
Something was off. Why did it feel as if they were talking about something else entirely? She had a bad feeling about this.
Jill tilted her head with a polite smile, and Roger gave a wry smile mixed with pity.
“You’re welcome, Teacher Jill. Nice to meet you.”
—Teacher…
Jill’s smile froze as he offered his hand for a handshake.
Her own reflexes had prevented her from shouting back, ‘What does that mean?!’ It was then she realized how much she had grown.
