89. The Determination of the Saint
Nigel, Douglas, Philip, and I surrounded a table.
After listening to what I said, Douglas was the first to stand up.
āYou want to save your former kingdom!?ā
Douglasā words were filled with anger.
It couldnāt be helped. I used to complain to Douglas about my mistreatment.
Apparently, Douglas made a stop my former kingdom once. As to what he said to Claude, that was a mystery to me.
Still, he probably informed Claude about their impending doom.
It might be because of that.
Douglas was unable to accept my words.
āYes.ā
Not taking my eyes off the approaching Douglas, my reply was short.
I was a little scared when Douglas, whom was well-built, narrowed our distance. But I decided to stand my ground.
āYou want to save the kingdom that once banished you!?ā
āAre you stupid or what?!ā
I could guess what Douglas was about to say.
For a while, the two of us glared at each other.
ā…Why?ā
Douglas was the first to speak.
He folded his arms and sat down on a chair. He seemed unconvinced.
āI also believe saving that kingdom is an act of foolishness. I donāt want to see Claude ever again. However, even though the archdemon, Baldur, is gone, if left alone, that kingdom will soon fall into ruin.ā
While most were critical of me, some were kind to me.
After being treated horribly by Claude, I decided to ditch the kingdom by myself.
To just return to that kingdom… it did sound crazy.
However…
ā…I, I canāt abandon that kingdom, not by any means. The incident with Baldur helped me realize this.ā
With the help of Nigel, Douglas, Philip, and Vincent, Baldur was defeated.
But my former kingdom had no means to fight against demons.
If more demons were to attack, that kingdom would be finished.
When I pictured the innocent getting massacred, my chest filled with pain.
āNigel seems to already be aware of this.ā
Douglas turned to Nigel.
ā…I am.ā
āWhy donāt you stop her, then? Do you know what kind of treatment Eliane suffered in that kingdom?ā
āOf course I tried to stop her, but she refused to listen.ā
Nigel shrugged.
āI believe Eliane properly thought this through. I want Eliane to do whatās best for her.ā
āTch! What a stubborn pair of husband and wife you are!ā
Huh!?
Certainly, Nigel was my fiancĆ©, but we arenāt formally married, yet!
Because of Douglas, my face was bright red.
āBut Nigel and I alone arenāt enough to save that kingdom.ā
I spoke while suppressing my embarrassment.
āDouglas… and also PhilipāI want your to help me if possible. Thatās the reason for this meeting.ā
āItās a wise decision. There are still some demons whoāre stronger than Baldur. Even if youāre the saint, dealing with all of them would be impossible. Itās no surprise that you want to rely on our power, however…ā
Doulgas left his seat and stood before me.
His thick chest felt intimidating.
Suddenly, Douglas grabbed my collar and brought his face closer.
āD, Douglas!? What the hell are youāā
Nigel tried to help, but I stopped him. I stared back into Douglasā eyes.
Usually, Iād be embarrassed. But at the moment, there was something urgent.
āNo matter how much you requested me, I wonāt save that kingdom. Besides, why do I have to help a kingdom that has no relation to me?ā
āOf course, itās only natural for you to think so. If Douglas refuses to help me, then it canāt be helped. I wonāt force you.ā
In good faith, I conveyed my thoughts to Douglas.
āI didnāt think I was saying anything crazy.
Was it my nature as a saint?
It was just impossible for me to leave that kingdom alone.
Until now, I had turned a blind eye towards that kingdom.
After all, when I thought about those whom were suffering, my chest hurt.
But, after witnessing Baldurās cruelty, I couldnāt ignore it anymore.
ā…Haa.ā
Douglas sighed deeply and slowly let go of me.
āOkay, I will lend you my power.ā
āReally?!ā
āOf course, but, if you dare attempt to return to that kingdom and leave Lynchgiham, I wonāt forgive you?! I also like this kingdom. I have no intention of returning to that kingdom.ā
āYes, of course. Iām ready to spend the rest of my life here.ā
When he heard my respond, Nigel smiled.
Nigel actually said the same thing last night.
Still, that was just preposterous.
I wanted to save my former kingdom due to my selfishness.
I didnāt feel like leaving Lynchgiham and returning to that place.
āIām sorry for treating you roughly, I wanted to make sure you were prepared.ā
āNo problem, although it hurt a little, I was able to see your face up close. Your eyelashes are longer than I expected.ā
āGahaha, you always say the most interesting things! Thatās why Iām motivated to help you!ā
Douglas laughed boisterously.
āBut… what about the Spirit King? Hasnāt he been terribly quiet until now?ā
Douglas mentioned Philip.
Up to that point, Philip had been quietly listening with his eyes closed.
āI have a lot of things to consider.ā
He opened his eyes.
āWell, are you against Eliane saving her former kingdom?ā
āNo, I agree. But more than respecting her hopes, itās for Lynchgiham… if we donāt save that kingdom, the world will perish. I donāt want that. As such, we have to do something about that kingdom.ā
āHuh?ā
Douglas tilted his neck.
Even if that kingdom was destroyed, it was unlikely that the demons would invade other kingdoms.
Baldur was a special case. The demons were usually cautious. Unless they had a good chance of winning, they wouldnāt just invade any kingdom.
…What was Philip implying?
āI thought they had given up long ago… but after hearing Baldurās story, that doesnāt seem to be the case…ā
āBaldurās story?ā
While I was wondering, Philip continued.
āTheyāre planning to revive the Demon King.ā
***T/N: Haa… this development came off as no surprise for me… after all, they need this woman to act like a saint sometimes.
Please also consider donating to my ko-fi! It’ll greatly support me in action, no matter the amount!
The story did mention about magic artifacts and all, will that help revive the demon king? Or probably the spirits of the massacred people in the kingdom. And Elaine is probably thinking about the poor ordinary people. Agree to save the kingdom but replace the king!!!!
I mean the fake saint and the royal family there are basically also demons imo but seriously…
If Elaine saves the Kingdom but doesn’t put that good Knight captain as the King then I will be disappointed. I’d take the chance to drag out Claude, the King, and Leticia and execute them publicly as enemies of Humanity.
She better not go there to wipe out the demons but leave those three in charge.
Everyone’s favorite boogeyman, the revived “Demon King.” After they kill him in this story, they’ll revive him for the sequel. And the spin-off. And every other saint story out there. Although, considering, the story of the Demon King itself is probably LOADS more interesting about the story of this saint who employs “guilt my harem companions into doing what I want” every time…are there any other women in this country apart from the sister??
While such a move might be good for the progression of the story, and indeed it does overall increase the quality of the novel, I have to say this still feels awkward, even wrong. I do have some expectations on the demon king thing, as it just might provide some reasons behind the crazy decisions of some characters (maybe the demon king is sealed but can still influence people, by making them stupid š ).
Thanks for the chapter! Awesome translation! May God bless you!
